Ramapo Torne Loop

This loop hike is one of the more rewarding hikes in Harriman State Park due the number of great view points.  However, this is a difficult trail due to many rocks and steep climbs and descents, occasionally requiring your hands.  The trailhead parking area can get very congested because this is also the trailhead to access Pine Meadow Lake where the majority of the visitors go.  The parking lot is small however, parking is permitted on the road in certain areas at the lot entrance.  Be sure to read the street signs.  Reeves Meadow visitor center is also located here and has seasonal bathrooms.

From the parking lot with the visitor center on your left, follow the Pine Meadow trail (red markers) for 1.5 miles.  The Pine Meadow trail meets the Seven Hills Trail (blue markers).  Turn right here on the Seven Hills Trail and follow for 1.6 miles.  The trail follows the ridge of Chipmunk Mountain and has some great view points. At a location called Torne View, the Raccoon Brook Hills Trail (black markers) is on the left. Turn left onto this trail and follow .7 miles, past the “Pulpit” rock formation where the trail intersects with the Hillburn-Torne-Sebago Trail (Orange markers).

Turn right onto the H-T-S Trail.  After about .3 miles you will reach the “Russian Bear” view point with great views of the Ramapo Valley.  Continue on the H-T-S-Trail for another 1.2 miles where you reach the Ramapo Torne view point. The descent from the Ramapo Torne is very steep requiring some down climbing.  The H-T-S- Trail ends on the Seven Hills Trail .8 miles from Ramapo Torne.  Turn left on the Seven Hills Trail and follow for 1.4 miles back to the Pine Meadow Trail.  Turn right and in a short distance you will be back at the parking area.
