Akumal

I originally visited Akumal as a side trip during a trip to Playa Del Carmen. I didn’t do any research on Akumal and thought I would explore a bit. I was happily surprised at the beautiful beach and research center studying Green Sea Turtles.  I enjoyed it so much we returned the next day for more swimming and relaxing.   A great place to spend the afternoon.

On my most recent trip to PDC, I found why Akumal is so popular.  There is an area south along the beach that has a grassy ocean floor bottom that is about 15 feet deep.  Many sea turtle feed here to the delight of snorkelers.

Just north of Akumal is Laguna Yal-ku.  It is a popular snorkeling location similar to Xel-ha without the crowds.
