Hike Info:

Trail is easy to follow but difficult at times.  Watch for cairns to stay on trail.

The Petrified Dunes Trail is shorter than it seems.  There is a trail head on Snow Canyon Road which is convenient for an out and back hike.  I did this as part of a loop hike with the Lava Flow Trail and the Three Ponds Trail.  From the trail head, turn left at the trail junction with the Butterfly Trail.  Follow the trail until you reach the slick rock sand dunes.  The first sand dune is the largest and ascends the left side.  Metal balls that have been cut in have mark the way however, these are sporadic so watch for cairns as well.

Once on top of this large petrified sand dune, you will find thousands of Moki Balls.  Please not remove the Moki Balls.  The trail descends the back side with great views of the valley and the layered ridges of the sand dunes.  Once you reach the Three Ponds Trail, you can turn back or continue straight up a steep section with unique features and more great views of the valley.
