WELLMAN LOOP TRAIL
Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, California

DETAILS

Directions:

The trail head is located just before you reach the Jedediah Smith visitor center.

Equipment:

  • Light hiking shoes
  • camera
  • water

Hike Info:

Short and seldom hiked, it is easy to follow but the trail is not well maintained.  Many downed trees across trail that may have been removed by now.

The Wellman Loop Trail is 1.5 miles long and is only 500 meters from the Jed Smith visitor center. The parking area for the trail head is across the street. There is a short walk to the loop. I thought this beginning part was the highlight of the hike. You walk through patches of clover on each side of the trail and it’s a nice section of old growth Redwoods.

There is a sign directing you to the right for the loop. The trail climbs quickly. The trail is steep all the way to the top. Near the top is a small grave of Redwoods but this trail is so steep it is hardly worth the effort. If you would like a workout this is a good trail. There are better trails in the park to see the Redwoods.
