Tashilhunpo Monastery was founded by the first Dalai Lama in 1447. It is a sprawling complex with many buildings, assembly halls and temples. Traditionally, Tashilhunpo is home of the Panchen Lhama, the second highest Lama in Tibet Buddhism. Not much of the monastery was destroyed during the cultural revolution due to The 10th Pnachen Lama and his friendliness with the Chinese. He even took a Chinese wife which at the time, was and still is very controversial. After the passing of the 10th Panchen Lama, the Chinese government selected the next Panchen Lama, far from the traditions of Tibetan religion and history.
The monastery has many alleyways, passages and temples to see. Being that you are accompanied by your guide, they will know the typical route to follow. You are permitted to explore the monastery (of course with your guide tagging along). If you see something you want to check, let the guide know and they should take you, Rarely they tell you no unless an area is restricted, they need to keep you on a schedule or they are being lazy.
Take note of the many murals through the monastery. Many are in excellent condition. Tashilhunpo also has many writings and scripture documented on the walls of the monastery. They are written in Tibetan and while you would not be able to understand, they are still beautiful to admire.
