Drepung Monastery is located on the outskirts of Lhasa. It is part of the Gelugpa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism and considered one of the three great monasteries in Tibet, the other two being Sera and Ganden. The monastery was built in the early 1400’s. Much of what is seen today is new construction after the Cultural Revolution. Remnants of the original buildings can be seen when walking the Drepung Kora.
There is many building at Drepung. The most interesting are the building surrounding an impressive court and the other is the Ganden Potrang. It is a great impressive hall. Also, if you go the right time of day, you can witness the Monks in a learning session atop one of the buildings. I was fortunate enough to see this in 2007.
There is an admission to the Monastery but this is usually included when you arrange with your tour guide.
