The Lava Flow Trail is a one mile loop hike that travels along the bottom of the lava flow and to the base of Sunset Crater volcano. There is no hiking permitted to the top of Sunset Crater. Still this is a very interesting and easy trail to follow. The trail is a cinder base and it is clear to see the lava flow and where it traveled. Do not climb on the lava flow itself as there is Lichen growing on the rocks and the rocks are also unstable and sharp.
You can access the Lava Flow Trail from the parking area and just a few yards down the paved path. The trail access is on the right for you to descend down onto the trail.
